Cholesterol Control Is Vital

High blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease (heart attack) that can be controlled. Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in this country

Introduction To Controlling Your Cholesterol

Your body needs cholesterol for digesting dietary fats, making hormones, building cell walls, and other important processes. The bloodstream carries cholesterol in particles called lipoproteins that are like blood-borne cargo trucks delivering cholesterol to various body tissues to be used, stored or excreted. But too much of this circulating cholesterol can injure arteries, especially the coronary ones that supply the heart. When blood flow to the heart is impeded, the heart muscle becomes starved for oxygen, causing chest pain (angina). If a blood clot completely obstructs a coronary artery affected by atherosclerosis, a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or death can occur.
LDL Levels To Control Cholesterol
Your LDL level is a good indicator of your risk for heart disease. Lowering LDL is the main aim of treatment if you have high cholesterol. In general, the higher your LDL level, the greater your chance of developing heart disease.
Your goal to lower your “bad” (LDL) and raise your “good” (HDL) cholesterol levels can be achieved by changing your lifestyle, taking medication or by a combination of the two. Your doctor may recommend changing your lifestyle as a preventative to cholesterol problems or if you cholesterol levels are considered borderline.
To Control Your Cholesterol
Eat a diet that is well-balanced and low in saturated fats.
Exercise regularly. Walking is a good exercise and it can help reduce stress.
If you smoke try to quit.
If you have diabetes monitor your blood sugar and keep it under control by following your diet and taking you medications as prescribed.
Try to take time to relax. It is hard to do but it will help you later in life.
Control your weight.
Do not drink excessive amounts of alcohol. One or two glasses of wine, or one beer a day has shown to lower bad and raise good cholesterol levels.

A key factor in controlling your cholesterol is that the public, patients and doctors today are better informed about the risks associated with elevated cholesterol and the benefits of lifestyle changes and medical measures aimed at lowering blood cholesterol.
There are steps that everyone can take to improve their cholesterol levels, and help prevent heart disease and heart attack. Here are the most important ones:
Choose foods low in saturated fat.
Exercise regularly.
Lose weight if you are overweight.
Have your blood check regularly.

To keep you control of your cholesterol, have it checked regularly, change your diet, find time to exercise, and take preventive steps to avoid the complications of high cholesterol. If you are diagnosed with high cholesterol, you will probably need to continue lifestyle changes and drug treatment throughout your life. Periodic monitoring of your cholesterol blood levels is necessary. Reducing high cholesterol levels will slow the progression of atherosclerosis

If your cholesterol is at 200 mg/dL, then this is a level that you will want to stay at.  This is a particularly important cholesterol number because it something you want to strive for.  Not everyone will obviously be at this cholesterol number, but the closer you are to it, the better.  Having this in mind will allow you to set goals for yourself and give you something to strive for.  In order to get close to this cholesterol number, you will most certainly want to eat heart-healthy foods.  Along with eating right, you will want to get plenty of exercise and avoid tobacco smoke as much as you possibly can.

Happy Cholesterol Or HDL Cholesterol

If the average person were to be asked about cholesterol there could be a variety of responses given.  Some of those responses could include clogged arteries, heart attack, bad diet, eating too much fat, etc.  However, if the truth were to be known, it would surprise a number of individuals to know that there are two types of cholesterol.  These two types of cholesterol are bad or LDL cholesterol and good or HDL cholesterol.

First of all, it is important to know that cholesterol is an important ingredient produced by the liver and aids in the metabolism process.  This metabolic process helps to maintain the health of the human body.  Furthermore, within the cholesterol that is produced by the liver are the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and the high-density lipoproteins (HDL).

Therefore, when educating ourselves about cholesterol it is important to know what the differences between LDL and HDL cholesterol are and what actions can be taken to raise the HDL cholesterol level.

Differences Between LDL And HDL Cholesterol

The primary difference between LDL and HDL cholesterol is the texture of this substance.  This is because the texture of LDL cholesterol is fatty in nature and the HDL cholesterol is watery in nature.

When released by the liver the cholesterol mixes with the blood in the blood stream.  The purpose of cholesterol is to promote the movement of cholesterol in the bloodstream which aids in the metabolism of the body.  Any excess cholesterol is then returned by the blood stream back to the liver.

If the cholesterol is LDL the mixture combines in a similar process that can be likened to combining water and oil.  They do not mix.  However, if the cholesterol that mixes with the blood in the bloodstream is HDL cholesterol then there is a more fluid blend of the two items together.

Therefore, if there is an excessive amount of LDL cholesterol mixing with the bloodstream the end result causes the cholesterol to cling to the inner portion of the arteries.  This clinging to the walls of the arteries can cause clogging which in turn can lead to major negative medical conditions.

If the cholesterol is HDL in nature this optimal blending of the cholesterol in the bloodstream limits the clogging of the cholesterol in the arteries and therefore maintains a healthy flow of blood within the body.

Increasing The Levels Of HDL Cholesterol Level

There are many actions that can be taken to increase one’s HDL cholesterol level.  If the individual is a smoker, one of the best ways to increase the HDL cholesterol level is to stop smoking.

Another important way to increase HDL cholesterol levels is by increasing the level of exercise.  The type of exercise should be one that addresses the cardiovascular system.  Examples of a good cardiovascular exercise routine include walking, aerobics, jogging, etc.

One additional way of increasing the HDL cholesterol level is for an individual to decrease their consumption of alcohol.  This is due to the fact that there is a scientific correlation between excessive amounts of alcohol consumed equating to decreased levels of HDL cholesterol.

There are many different ideas and myths that surround cholesterol.  For instance, there are such things as good and bad cholesterol.  Therefore, there may come a time in your life when you need to start eating a high cholesterol diet.  Your doctor or physician will most certainly be able to get you started on the right foot, but where should you go if you are looking for more answers?

If you are at home, you definitely use the internet as a resource.  Say you are unsure about a certain food and you want to make sure it fits into your high cholesterol diet; you can try searching the internet for an answer.  There are many websites devoting to providing people with good health tips, especially when it comes to cholesterol.  There are many myths surrounding high cholesterol diets, so make you sure you know exactly what the food that you are eating can do for you.

That being said, there are many different foods that can be eaten in a high cholesterol diet.  Again, if you are unsure about a certain food, you are recommended to research the answer.  You may just learn something new and find a new food that you can eat as a part of your new diet.

Some Foods You Can Eat In A High Cholesterol Diet

The eggs that are produced today are actually lower in cholesterol.  Eating an egg every day won’t raise your chances for getting heart disease, either.  Different kinds of eggs have similar cholesterol contents as well.

Believe it or not, but garlic has been proven to have a positive effect on people in high cholesterol diets.  So far, the effects are short-term and it is unknown how long the effects of garlic will have on a person after three months, but it still would not be a bad idea to include some garlic in your diet.  It can lower total cholesterol and bad cholesterol while lowering high blood pressure as well.

Other foods that are important in a high cholesterol diet include coffee, soy, vegetables, red wine (a glass a day), whole grains, and even chocolate.

You will certainly have to do some research on your own to find which foods will fit into your particular diet.  The reasoning for this is because everyone’s diet will be unique because our bodies are all completely different.  Either way, you should go the extra mile in all of this because it will keep you feeling healthier for a much longer period of time.
